Judge Max Baer less by what he was than by what he might
have been had he not possessed a self-destructiveness.
When he originally burst upon the fistic scene with all
the explosiveness of one of his dynamite-laden right
hands--possibly the best in the history of the heavyweight
division--Max Baer had all the makings of one of the
all-time greats. In a career that had spanned just 15
months, the 6-foot, 210-pound Adonis had fought 26 times,
winning all but 3--2 of those losses coming on fouls. His
lethal right had accounted for 100 knockdowns in less than
100 rounds. With boxing on the relief roles like the rest
of the nation and in dire need of a hero, it was small
wonder that the boxing public would adopt this massive
Puck to lift the game and their spirits at the same time.
